Co-Hosting an Episode of the Boldly Went Podcast

What’s Boldly Went, you may ask? They host live storytelling events for outdoor adventurers of all kinds to share their stories. The events are laid-back and fun, with a range of adventurers from casual runners, accomplished thru-hikers, world-record holding boaters, solar eclipse skydivers, and many more. The stories from these events are then shared on the Boldly Went Podcast. You may remember in April 2018, my own story of a prickly situation at the Javelina Jundred was featured on the podcast.

When Angel and Tim, the creators of Boldly Went, asked me to co-host an episode of the podcast, I was immediately drawn to these stories because of how relatable they were. Adventures aren’t just perfect Instagram shots and epics. Adventures also include less dignified moments… that may or may not involve less-than-glamorous bodily functions. And let’s be honest, that’s hilarious. And make far better entertainment than picture-perfect excursions.

Of course, great stories go down best with a tasty drink in hand. I often like to pair whiskies with trails in my Spirit of the Trail series, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pair whiskies with the stories in this episode! Don’t worry, I brought these for Angel and I to sip on while we recorded the episode. 🙂

Story pairings

Story 1: Sarah Sugarman – Ups and Downs in Mexico
Kilchoman Sauternes Cask Finish
This dram is bright and sunny like the desert. Due to the higher alcohol content, it has a bit of a kick and a bite, not unlike the cactus she encountered. It’s surprising and also features opposing flavors: bright and sweet on one side and smoky and savory on the other. Just like hills and valleys of an adventure. The smokiness highlights the bright sweetness, like a challenge that makes you appreciate the summit even more.

Story 2: Julie Cassatta – Cherries Jubilee
Freeland Spirits Bourbon (Pinot Noir finish)
This bourbon has caramel and berry flavors, and is delightful like ice cream after days on the trail. Bourbon is the classic American whiskey, for the classic American trail – the Appalachian. Also, Freeland Spirits is one of the few women owned and operated distilleries in history. It’s run by strong, incredible women, just like Julie!

Story 3: Brooke Gemmell – Snotty in Sapa
Westland Reverie Fig. 1
This dynamic whiskey features dried fruits, honey, and baking spices, but is unique because of its many parts. It was made with three different types of malted barley, and aged with six different types of casks. This whiskey has a delicious complexity that stays with you, like the memories from a worldwide trip that spans Europe into Asia.

So grab your favorite drink, and enjoy these fantastic stories on Episode 127. (If you want to learn more about these stories, check out the Field Notes page.) Enjoy!
